ShinyGoldShoes Open Creativity

Open Creativity is a project that ShinyGoldShoes is heading to encourage the use of Open Source software in the arts community and specifically in multimedia creation.

We will regularly be posting tutorials and information regarding our production methods and resources to help people learn using open source software and community focused modes of production. As computing moves away from the old, closed proprietary software model into an open, community-focused ideology, we have sided with the new open model as we believe that it is the future and has more to offer the world. In recent years the software side of multimedia production has become a virtual monopoly dominated by Adobe, Autodesk, Apple and Microsoft, buying up smaller companies and disposing of them. This methodology does not fit our values and does not help us give our clients what we want to offer and what they need.

For us Open Source is a philosophy, not a term to argue over the minutia of its use. It goes beyond which software you use to do the same task; it is about having a community mentality. ShinyGoldShoes as a company always pushes to work in a community focused manner. An example being this website you are viewing. The Apache web server is run on a Debian Linux machine powered by 100% wind generated energy, the site is built on the Open Source Joomla content management system, the coding was done in Aptana and Eclipse and uses the jQuery code library extensively and the testing was done on our computers running Kubuntu Linux.
